ENNEAGRAM COACHING/COnsulting from a christian perspective
“ Is the Enneagram (a personality assessment tool) worth our time and attention?"
"Is it helpful for personal or spiritual development?"
"Or could it actually be a hindrance to true transformation and growth as a Christ-follower?”
I hear people ask questions like these. Maybe you’ve had similar thoughts.
At times, these questions have popped up in my mind.
And... after years of study and experience with the Enneagram I concluded that it is valuable for continued spiritual growth. I agree with Spiritual Director and Enneagram Trainer, David Wu* when he said that "The Enneagram is not the end-all be-all of spiritual formation." (Read his entire thought-provoking quote below)

The Enneagram is a powerful tool, but we must remember that it is just a tool... The Enneagram itself does not transform us, the Holy Spirit does. No human-made tool is without its limitations. If we take an assessment, the results carry no ultimate authority on who we are. But a tool in the hands of a master craftsman can accomplish much. God is the Master Potter, and we are the clay (Isaiah 64:8). The Enneagram is just one of many instruments the Lord might use to shape and form us into something beautiful. |
Starting my Enneagram Journey:
I had heard of the Enneagram, but thinking it might not be worth the time or energy, I didn't pursue learning about it.
Then suddenly everything changed.
During an interview with prolific writer Cecil Murphey, he said, “Joan, the Enneagram has been the most valuable change-agent in my life thus far, as a Christian pastor, writer, husband, father, and friend than anything else. Well…except for God and His Word.”
"Thanks Cecil, I'll check it out," I said.
Silently I thought. “Hey, Joan, if Cecil Murphey believes it is powerful, it’s probably worth investigating.” After all, Cecil is a knowledgeable author of over 140 books selling into the millions including New York Times best seller, 90 Minutes in Heaven, and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story. (Carson is the former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.)
That phone conversation happened over two decades ago. Afterwards, I started to read, study, and research about the Enneagram. I took Enneagram assessments, attended training workshops, and prayed about it all. And true to what Cecil said, this surprising tool helped me understand myself and others better. However, I wondered what might be missing in the process."

Enneagram: A Transformation Journey to Developing Christ-Virtues
Things shifted again for me when I listened to David Wu, founder of Mosaic Center for Spiritual Formation, teach about the Enneagram. As I listened, I recognized the missing piece. For me, the Enneagram moved beyond being a personality tool for typing oneself and “becoming a better person” to a transformational method of Christian Spiritual Formation. I saw that each of the 9 Enneagram “types” represents a Christ-virtue and although each person may have a preferred type, we are invited to grow into the virtues of all 9 types as they represent another aspect of Christ’s character. (I still believe there is merit in many of the other Enneagram methods, as well.) |
Enneagram Coaching/Consulting with Joan Webb
Enneagram coaching between Joan and each coachee invites you into a personal, individual, informative, and hopeful experience.
Joan uses the 200-question Wagner Enneagram Wagner Enneagram Personality Style Scales (WEPSS.) It’s a fairly simple and straightforward tool that doesn’t take long to complete online. It provides three sets of meaningful scores for all nine numbers: total scores, resourceful scores, and less-resourceful scores. Beyond identifying one’s predominant personality style, the WEPSS presents a more holistic picture of how all nine numbers are in play in an individual. Additionally, the WEPSS is the only Enneagram inventory published by a major psychological test company and reviewed in Buros’s Mental Measurements Yearbook, a respected authority in the testing field.
After you complete the online WEPSS assessment, Joan reviews and studies your personal percentile scores. Then you and Joan interact on the phone, Zoom or in person. She listens to you as you share your stories and thoughts about your specific scores. Then she coaches you around how this all relates to your preferred Enneagram types, and how you can develop Christ-like virtues in every role of your life. (See in the chart how the 9 Enneagram types relate to 9 Christ-virtues)

"Christian Spiritual Formation can be simply defined as the lifelong journey of being transformed into the image of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and in the context of a deepening relationship of love and trust in God. This is the point of whatever we do with the Enneagram."
